D.I.Y – Digitize your slides and negatives!

Image from Make instruction manual

While browsing the web I came across this interesting article that I might even give a try myself! It's from the wonderful people at Make.

Using a single sheet of thick A4 silver card stock and a template from Make's website, you can create a handy piece of origami that helps you scan all your old negatives and slides into your computer. Something that most scanners can't do. This could be a useful thing to have lying around for when you dig up all those old photo negatives hiding in the back of a draw somewhere!

You can find instructions on how to make this handy "device" here at the Make:Projects website

How To – Install Ubuntu onto a Bootable USB stick

Have you ever wanted to "play around" with Linux, but didn't want to burn a disk with it because you found it to complicated or you thought it would be wasting a CD? Well with most modern computers its possible to boot off a USB stick. You can install many operating systems onto a USB stick with a simple utility called UNetbootin. In this How-To I’ll show you how to install Ubuntu (or your operating system of choice) onto a USB stick.

You Will Need:

  • USB thumb drive (minimum 2GB)
  • A Windows PC (I’m using Windows 7, but you can also do this on Linux and MAC)
  • An Internet connection (I’m assuming you already have this as your reading the How-To!)

Step one involves opening your favourite web browser and pointing it towards http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/. This will take you to the UNetbootin webpage where you have three choices of downloads. One for Windows, one for Linux, and one for Mac.

We’re going to select Windows.

How to – View you iPod or iPhone on your computer

Have you ever wondered how Apple got there iPhones to display on the big screen? Well I have no idea how Apple did it, but I can tell you about a couple of way of doing it, and show you one of them!

First of all lets go over two ways of getting you iPhone to display on your computer.

Method 1:

This involves having a jailbroken iPhone, which will void your warranty. There are two programs for this method that you will need. The first is ScreenSplitr and the second is iDemo. I will not be showing you how to use this method as you can only view you iPhone, but not control it at the same time. Also, I have not been able to make this method work for me, but many people have had much success.

The two links you will need are:

  1. http://screensplitr.com/
  2. http://www.plutinosoft.com/idemo

Screensplitr installs on you iPhone, and iDemo on your computer. (iDemo is a trial)

Method 2:

This is the method I am going to show you, it involves using an iPhone plugin called Veency. Again you have to have a jailbroken iPhone to do this, so remember this can void your warrenty!
